Volker Bernhard
is a writer, journalist, and media scholar based in Berlin. He studied social and media sciences at Freie Universität Berlin and Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, and has written for Süddeutsche Zeitung and taz. His dissertation, After Home. A Critical Media Theory of Dwelling, draws on architecture, art, history, philosophy, and sociology to rethink Western notions of dwelling. It examines the reciprocal, socially and technologically mediated formation of the domestic world and its inhabitants as a key process of subjectivation, and foregrounds the significance of dwelling in the work of, among others, Walter Benjamin, Félix Guattari, Vilém Flusser, and within Surrealism.
